Though the trailers and previews had obvious likenesses to "Moulin Rouge," "Cabaret," "Chicago," and "Nine," with an all-star cast, sassy song-and-dance numbers, killer vocals and revealing costumes, Burlesque still ended up fourth in its first week at the box office.

In the film, Christina Aguilera plays Ali, a small-town girl from Iowa with a dark past who moves to Los Angeles in hopes of fulfilling her dream as a performer. She stumbles upon a Burlesque lounge owned by Tess (Cher). Tess is a retired dancer who is hounded by a wealthy businessman, Marcus (Eric Dane). He offers her a considerable amount of money to buy her beloved windowless spot with the best view on the Sunset Strip.

On top of that, Tess is having trouble finding new talent and is dealing with troupe members, particularly Nikki (Kristen Bell), who is never on time for curtain call. After paying her dues as a waitress at the lounge, Ali lands a role as the lead showgirl by delivering a riveting performance after a brief, unexpected technical malfunction. She also becomes romantically involved with her co-worker/roommate, Jack (Cam Gigandet, "Twilight").
