Lena Dunham is just 24. Usually, when a 24-year-old writes, directs and stars in a film that also features her mother and sister and the home she grew up in, warning bells go off. But Tiny Furniture, Dunham’s self-referential second feature, is the exception. Dunham is Aura, an aimless college grad who’s returned to New York to find her way. She moves back in with her mother (Dunham’s mother, artist Laurie Simmons) and sister (real life sister Grace) and spends her days trying to find a bit of happiness amid boys who treat her poorly, a best friend with a massive sense of entitlement, her own selfishness and an art philosophy that’s modern but questionable.

Tiny Furniture might sound like typical mumblecore fare, but it isn’t. Though not much happens, the dialogue is crisp, smart and funny, blistering with pop culture but sincere without pandering. The film is nicely framed and elegantly shot.
